Whaling City Festival announces changes after New Bedford triple stabbing
Changes have been announced after multiple stabbings this weekend in the area of a popular festival.
According to police, on Saturday, at approximately 8:45 p.m., New Bedford officers assigned to the Whaling City Festival responded to a disturbance.
Officers subsequently learned that multiple parties had been involved in a fight, and as a result three individuals were stabbed.
The three parties were rendered aid and subsequently transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not released.
The Whaling City Festival issued the following statement in response to the stabbings:
“The Whaling City Festival is saddened by the unfortunate incident that occurred, approximately a quarter-mile outside of the festival area, on Saturday evening.
“The safety of our guests, volunteers, vendors, and staff remains our highest priority. The Whaling City Festival is a family-focused community event, and we appreciate the New Bedford Police Department for their swift response and continued partnership.
“Following discussions with the New Bedford Police Department, additional police will be in place for Sunday’s event and festival hours have been adjusted (8:00 p.m. closure). These measures are being taken to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.”
The festival is known for its rides, games, food, and vendors and takes place at Buttonwood Park.
At this time the investigation into the matter is active and ongoing.
