A well-known man who recently served at a local fire department has passed away from injuries sustained in a crash.

28-year-old Garrett Coyne, formerly of Tiverton, died Thursday morning after leaving the roadway and striking a tree while riding his motorcycle off-duty in South Carolina where he now lives. No other vehicles were involved.

According to the Tiverton Firefighter Union, Coyne worked in Tiverton from 2019 to 2021 before his move to SC, where even in his short time, he made a lasting impression on the town and fire department.

“Garrett was a huge personality whose dedication to firefighting and public service stood out among all of his other great qualities. We send our deepest condolences to his wife Katelin and their two daughters. We also send our condolences to our brothers and sisters in Midway Fire Rescue (South Carolina), where Garrett worked the last two years, and where he undoubtedly had the same positive impact on every person that was lucky enough to know him. Rest easy brother.”

Midway Fire Rescue also released a statement grieving the loss of Coyne.

“Garrett’s family and loved ones, in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days as we mourn. Garrett was an incredible husband, father, colleague, firemen and friend. You will be dearly missed by many Garrett!”
