13-year-old killed, another injured, in dirt bike crash in Wareham

A 13-year-old girl was killed and another rider was injured in a dirt bike crash in Wareham, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said Tuesday.

At approximately 4 p.m. Monday, officials were notified of a fatal dirt bike crash at Wareham MX Park, located at 3042 Cranberry Highway. and an investigation began.

The female victim was reportedly on the dirt bike track traveling southbound and appeared to have lost control after landing a jump, swerving into the parallel lane which had northbound riders. The teen collided with a male rider in the northbound lane.

The victim was transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham where she was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries. She has been identified as Ava Pioppi, 13, of Carver.

The male dirt bike rider was also tansported to Tobey Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. His name was not released.

The park issued the following statement.

“We are closed until further notice. We had a tragic accident today and need time to pray for the family’s involved. We will let everyone no when we will open again. Please understand and be patient. The motocross family needs to stick together and stay strong. Thank you everyone for the support”

The investigation is ongoing by Massachusetts State Police and Wareham Police.
