Yarmouth Police investigating crash that ejects, kills, one

Police are investigating a fatal crash from overnight.

According to Yarmouth Police, on Thursday July 23, 2020 at approximately 11:12 p.m., Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Dickey was parked on Old Main Street by Salt Works Lane in South Yarmouth monitoring traffic. At that time he observed a vehicle pass by his location traveling westbound at an extremely high rate of speed. Officer Dickey pulled his cruiser onto Old Main Street, but was unable to maintain visual contact with the vehicle because of the extreme rate of speed at which it was traveling.

At approximately 11:14 p.m. Officer Dickey radioed dispatch and advised that he located the vehicle and that it had crashed. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree on the south side of Old Main Street near River Street. The operator was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the operator is being held pending notification of family members. The driver was the lone occupant in the vehicle.

The accident is under investigation by the Yarmouth Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit with assistance from the Barnstable Police Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations. The Yarmouth Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Yarmouth Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
