Woman found unconscious behind the wheel in one of two Westport crashes

One of two Westport crashes led to OUI charges yesterday.

According to Detective Sergeant Bryan McCarthy, at 1:16 p.m., Westport Police responded to a motor vehicle crash in the area of 158 American Legion Highway.

An accident investigation revealed a truck being operated by a female from Johnston, RI was traveling west bound when she struck the guardrail and then knocked down a utility pole holding a transformer and power lines.

Prior to police arrival, an ABC trash truck attempted to pass the crash and was caught in the downed lines.

While police and fire were clearing the accident scene, Detective Turner Ryan observed a Ford Mustang drive off the road and crash into the trees along American Legion Highway near Robert Street.

McCarthy stated that the vehicle was being operated by a female who was unconscious behind the wheel.

After a medical evaluation by Officer Kyle Fernandes and Detective Ryan, it was determined that the female had overdosed. She was administered two doses of Narcan by police and later transported to a local hospital by Westport Fire.

Traffic in the area was affected for several hours as utility workers replaced the downed pole.

The original crash was investigated by Officer Todd Oliver and the second was investigated by Officer Kyle Fernandes who issued a summons to the operator for Operating Under the Influence of Drugs, Negligent Operation and Failure to Stay in Marked Lanes.

Police did not reveal the name of the driver.
