BOSTON – It’s been four months since sweet Sophie, a four-and-a-half-year-old pit bull mix, was surrendered to the MSPCA-Angell following a Law Enforcement investigation. Her owner, Carl Moglika Jr., is facing animal cruelty charges, but Sophie is still looking for her forever home.

When Sophie came to the MSPCA she was emaciated and had unique behavior challenges due to her past neglect and abuse. Neighbors could hear Sophie being hit and crying in pain. In her time at the shelter, though, she’s gotten to a healthy weight and is learning the typical dog behavior that she was denied in her previous home. Sophie spends her afternoons lounging in staff offices, perfecting her midday napping skills, and has recently began to explore making some new dog friends. She’s also learning how to fetch.

Sophie is a silly and engaging dog who loves to be around people, but she’s now been in the shelter for more than 100 days – that’s about four times as long as the average dog stays at the MSPCA. She has made much progress forming healthy relationships with staff and volunteers in the MSPCA’s Boston adoption center, but her true transformation will begin once she has a family and a home of her own.

Now, the MSPCA is issuing an urgent call for qualified adopters to step forward and give Sophie the life she deserves.

“We need a hero,” said Morgan Katz, MSPCA-Angell director of behavior services – adoption centers. “Sophie is an incredibly sweet dog. We’re constantly amazed at the enthusiasm with which she approaches each new adventure, and we have no doubt she’ll meet her new adopters in the same way. Sophie deserves to have a happy life in a home with people who appreciate how special she is.”

Sophie should be the only pet in an adult-only home with adopters who are committed to continuing her behavior training. The MSPCA Adoption Center Behavior Team will also be there to support Sophie and her adopters as she transitions from the shelter to her forever home.

Interested adopters may learn more about Sophie and apply to adopt her at mspca.org/Sophie.
