Wife of Fall River native killed in Afghanistan remembers her husband

In a powerful interview conducted by CBS Evening News, Allie Emond, the wife of Fall River native Eric Emond who was killed in November 2018 in Afghanistan, talks about the American hero and the fateful day she got the news.

Sgt. Emond who attended Osborn Elementary School, Healy Elementary School, Henry Lord Middle School, and Durfee High School, had been killed by a roadside bomb on November 27th. His 7th combat tour.

After seeing the morning news about the attack, Allie thought Eric was in the clear as she had not received a phone call. Later that day, however, Allie had a knock at the door. “I had opened the door not even looking. You just know. There’s not a whole lot of reasons that there’d be two uniformed soldiers standing outside of your door. And I just wanted them to say it. They have the things that they have to say, but I just wanted them to say it… My 4-year-old saw the whole thing.”

Sgt. Emond was a founding member of the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes, a Veterans’ service organization, who supports Gold Star families. Eric didn’t want those families to be forgotten. Now in a cruel twist of fate, Massachusetts Fallen Heroes is now taking care of the family that Eric left behind.

“Every choice he made was for other people, was for the betterment of others, whether it be his family, or his country,” Emond said. “I was able to meet Marines that he served with. And they would say to me, ‘He made me the person I am.’ And all I could say back was, ‘Me too.’ He was an incredible person. He couldn’t have been a better man. And I guess I just want people to know that.”
