What to do about Fall River trash dumping?

If you live in the city you have seen it. It is near the mills. It is at Dave’s Beach. If you go by any secluded or wooded area in Fall River it is there. It is trash.

We have some great volunteers in this city cleaning up the streets. Angels Anonymous does clean-ups and food drives. Who hasn’t seen the results of the great work of Citizens for a Cleaner Fall River? They tackle street after street armed with only cleaning tools and the love in their hearts for our city. The problem is these selfless groups of people have to return to the same places they once worked hard to spruce up.

The question is. What do we do about it?

There have been many suggestions. Lower the disposal fee on bulk items, have prisoners do clean-ups, or get rid of Pay-As-You-Throw (the mayor has stated he plans to do so, but plan has not yet been released) are among them. Those may help, but I think it comes down to an easier solution.

City pride.

There is more pride in Fall River then many would think. Have a talk with some life long residents of the city and you will know that to be true. When it comes to trash though, those sentiments don’t seem to be enough. You can’t force people to have pride. You can’t arrest or fine people for lack of pride. You can pass out stiffer penalties when someone litters, but many of the incidents go undetected until the deed has already been done.

How do we fix the issue of trash dumping in Fall River? Let us know!

Plenty of people on welfare or other “programs who have time to earn some of their money.

Individuals that receive transitional assistance such as food stamps, cash benefits or housing assistance should be required to volunteer their time to earn these benefits. There are so many Fall River Residents that do not work, collect these benefits and only go out of their house (in their pajamas) to buy food and other items with their benefit cards…..it should be mandatory that they “work” for their assistance payments
