Weymouth man accused of murdering Marshfield couple pleads not guilty in return to Massachusetts

BROCKTON – A Weymouth man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he brutally murdered a married couple found bludgeoned to death in their home, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz and Marshfield Police Chief Phillip A. Tavares have announced.

Today in Plymouth District Court, Christopher Keeley, 27, pleaded not guilty to two counts of Murder. He was held without bail.

On November 29, just after 9:15 p.m., Marshfield Police received a call requesting that a well-being check be performed at a home located at 75 Gotham Hill Drive. Upon arrival, Marshfield Police officers discovered the bodies of a male and female victim with obvious signs of trauma. The victims, who were bludgeoned and stabbed, were determined to be deceased on scene. They were identified as married couple, Carl and Vicki Mattson, both 70.

Marshfield Police contacted the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and began their investigation.

Detectives developed probable cause and identified Keeley as a person of interest in the double homicide, and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

According to CBS News, the couple was likely attacked last week over a barking dog, and it was a friend of Keeley’s who asked police to do a wellbeing check concerned that Keeley had been living with the couple as a favor to a family member but had recently been asked to leave. Keeley had also stated that he had an urge to hurt people, including the couple.

Cruz stated that the suspect and the couple were acquaintances.

Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Fusion Center issued a BOLO alert for Keeley, and a 2019 black Jeep Wrangler. Investigators recovered and secured the Jeep in an Avon parking lot, unoccupied.

Keeley had reportedly used one of the couple’s credit cards in Georgia.

The couple’s dog was also found deceased in the residence.

On December 1, Massachusetts State Police and Marshfield Police located and placed Keeley under arrest in Miami Beach, Florida. Keeley waived his right to rendition in Florida, and Massachusetts State Police and Marshfield Police returned him to Massachusetts this morning.

Keeley is next scheduled to appear in court on February 28, 2023.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph Janezic is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by Massachusetts State Police and Marshfield Police.
