UPDATE: Westport responds to three car crash Saturday morning that injured 6
A three car crash in Westport Saturday morning resulted in multiple injuries.
Just before 11:00 a.m., the Westport Police Department received several E-911 calls regarding a multiple vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 88 and Hixbridge Road. Preliminary reports indicated several parties had been injured and occupants in these vehicles were entrapped.
When officers arrived on scene, they observed a red Toyota Rav 4 in the southbound lane facing west, with the front windshield shattered. A second motor vehicle, a white Chevrolet Silverado, was lying on its passenger side off the roadway. A third vehicle, an International Dump Truck, was parked on Hixbridge Road. After an initial assessment had been made of the crash scene, officers requested four ambulances to tend to the injured parties.
According to Detective Sergeant Christopher Dunn, a preliminary crash investigation by Officer Douglas Wenson revealed the Toyota Rav 4 was traveling south on Route 88 at the intersection of Hixbridge Road. Witnesses to the crash stated the driver took a left hand turn into the northbound lane while having a red traffic light. Subsequently, the operator of the Silverado crashed into the Rav 4 and then collided with the dump truck. The dump truck had been stopped at a red light facing west. After colliding with the dump truck, the Silverado rolled onto its driver’s side before coming to rest.
Drivers and all occupants suffered apparent minor injuries and were transported to Charlton Memorial and St. Luke’s Hospitals by Westport, Little Compton and Tiverton Fire Departments.
An off duty St. Luke’s Hospital nurse stopped to attend to vehicle occupants. She was able to assist in the triage of injured individuals as a result of the crash. She left the scene prior to being identified by officers or paramedics.
The Westport Police would like to remind the public of the increase in traffic headed to state and local beaches and to take your time and drive carefully.
The operator of the Rav 4 was cited for several motor vehicle violations.
Tiverton Fire, Dartmouth EMS and Little Compton provided mutual aid.
The incident caused a major traffic backup on Route 88.
