West Warwick Police Department gives touching tribute to tragic loss of one of their own

West Warwick Detective Matthew Beltrami tragically passed away and his co-workers issued a tribute to him on social media.

“Friends,

“On behalf of the West Warwick Police Department, I would like to thank everyone for their comments and prayers of support and solidarity during this difficult time. The untimely and tragic loss of our brother, Detective Matthew Beltrami, has affected us all on many levels. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Beltrami family and we vow to continue to support each other.

“Matt was a valued, 17-year veteran of our department. He was extremely dedicated to his auxiliary duties as a respected and decorated crisis negotiator, diligent opioid response liaison, and most importantly as an empathetic mental health first aid trainer and the first person to step up to help anyone in need. Matt was a born leader amongst his peers and he honorably served his country in the US Air Force and his community as a police officer, prosecutor/detective, Navigator Liaison, Honor Guard member, Union executive, Crisis Negotiation Team Leader, and one of our top Go To guys.

“We believe his legacy should be centered around officer wellness and recognizing that It is OK not to be OK. Matt joins a group of dozens of police officers this year whose tragic loss reminds us that we are all human beings with various needs, frailties, and response strategies. This escalating trend needs to stop, and we must follow Matt’s work ethic and life’s calling to step in and help others in times of need. The WWPD and the Beltrami family are deeply concerned about the wellbeing of our first responders and want our loss to help save others.

“I would also like to acknowledge the above and beyond response and assistance extended by our federal, state, municipal and community service partners. Your actions have not gone unnoticed and are appreciated by all.

“Matt was the epitome of our Department motto: Courage ~ Sacrifice ~ Devotion and his absence leaves a significant void in our lives and within our Department. More timely information will be posted when appropriate.
