A man was shot by police Friday afternoon after a reported knife attack.

According to Colonel Bradford Connor, at 4:20 p.m., a group of patrol officers were entering the main lobby of Warwick Police Headquarters from the community room after a briefing and were immediately confronted by a 29-year-old male who was holding a knife. The male lunged at the police officers striking one officer in the torso. Connor stated that the officer’s bullet proof vest stopped the knife and was not injured.

Four officers, including the officer that was stabbed, discharged their firearms striking the suspect which ended the attack. Officers immediately rendered medical aid and summoned Warwick Rescue, who transported the suspect to RI Hospital where he is in stable condition.

Members of the Attorney General’s Office, Rhode Island State Police, and the Warwick Police Department continue to investigate the incident.

In accordance with our Use of Force policy, each of the officers involved have been placed on a non-punitive administrative leave pending completion of an administrative review.

The front lobby of Warwick Police Department will be closed to the public until further notice. Anyone wishing to file a routine police report or speak with the police are asked to call 401.468.4200.
