Victim identified in Saturday’s fatal shark attack in Wellfleet

The man who died in a shark attack off of Cape Cod Saturday afternoon has been identified.

According to the Cape Cod National Seashore, at approximately 12:30p.m. on Saturday, September 15, a male was allegedly bit by a shark 300 yards south of Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet. The patient was transported to Cape Cod Hospital via ambulance where he died from his injuries.

Officials have identified the victim as Arthur Medici, 26, of Revere.

Medici was pulled from the water and provided emergency first aid including CPR.

According to a GoFundMe page organized by his family and friends, Arthur was a very happy person and also an engineering student who was engaged to be married. He loved life and was an active member of a Christian church. He loved hiking, biking, surfing and various other sports. He was always joyful and willing to help others, even going as far as feeding the homeless.

Truro Police announced that due to the tragic event in Wellfleet, all ocean side beaches in Truro will be closed to swimming until further notice.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy issued a statement: “The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy offers our most sincere condolences to the family of the victim, and all who witnessed or are affected by today’s tragic incident.”

“We remain committed to facilitating the study of shark behavior in an effort to provide information to the public and to safety officials who manage our beaches.”

Wellfleet PD is working with the National Park Service and the MA State Police on this investigation.
