Updated details on Route 24 incident that led to DUI arrest
A local woman has been charged in a Berkley crash that sent multiple people to the hospital.
A serious crash occurred on Route 24 South in Berkley between Exits 11-12 at approximately 9:45 p.m. Saturday night.
According to Massachusetts State Police, a school bus went off the road into the right shoulder and went into the woods and did not roll over. The bus, filled with 25 occupants, was returning to Tiverton, RI from a group trip to La Salette Shrine in North Attleboro. The age range of the occupants was from young children to adult. Two adults were transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. All other transports are still not believed to be serious injuries. Route 24 South was shut down in the area during the transport of the victims.
A passenger car also went off the road in what was declared by the Berkley Chief at the time as a mass casualty incident. The operator of the other vehicle, Christy Gilpatrick, 27, of Warren was arrested for DUI.
According to WJAR 10 court records show Gilpatrick pleaded no contest to a DUI .15 or greater out of Bristol last year.
Massachusetts State Police are still investigating the incident as it is unclear if Gilpatrick played a role in the bus crashing.
