U.S. Embassy Kenya announces capture of suspect wanted for murder of Whitman woman found dead in Boston

Authorities have located a suspect in the murder of a Massachusetts woman.

The U.S. Embassy Nairobi Kenya commended the efforts of Kenyan law enforcement for apprehending Kenyan fugitive Kevin Kangethe of Lowell, suspected to have murdered Margaret Mbitu of Whitman in Massachusetts. United States law enforcement, the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions have been working side by side to locate and capture the fugitive.

On November 2nd, The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police announced that an arrest warrant had been obtained for Kangethe suspected of killing Mbitu whose body was located in a garage at Logan Airport. The victim had been reported missing by her family and was the subject of a missing person investigation.

Massachusetts State Troopers assigned to the Logan Airport Barracks located a vehicle occupied by a deceased adult female in the Central Parking garage at Logan Airport. A subsequent investigation by the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and State Police Troop F Detectives confirmed that the victim was the missing Whitman woman, 31-year-old Margaret Mbitu. Evidence indicates that she was the victim of a homicide.

The investigation identified the suspect as Kangethe and determined that he had boarded a flight to Kenya. State Police Detectives obtained a warrant charging Kangethe with Mbitu’s homicide.

The investigation indicates that Kangethe and Mbitu knew each other, and that the homicide was not a random act.
