Two Fall River men convicted in a 2015 murder were sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Kevin Lara, of Tremont Street who was 19 at the time and Tavon Pires, of Eastern Avenue who was 17 at the time were charged with murder, assault and battery by means of a firearm, armed assault with intent to rob, carrying an illegal firearm, carrying a loaded illegal firearm and carrying a firearm after a prior violent conviction.

On Friday, March 20, 2015, at 7:45 p.m., Fall River Police Officers responded to several 911 calls reporting shots fired in the area of Whipple and Manton Streets in Fall River. One of the 911 callers reported that the shooters were three males dressed in black who were on Whipple Street heading towards Osborn Street.

Additional 911 calls reported that a person was down at the intersection of Osborn and Ridge Streets behind St. Anne’s Hospital. Upon arrival, officers located 20-year-old Anthony Carvalho, who was suffering from multiple gunshots wounds. Carvalho was treated on scene by Fall River Fire Department rescue and rushed to St. Anne’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

It is believed that Carvalho tried to walk to the hospital on his own after being shot in what was described as a random and violent armed robbery.

Lara was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Due to being a juvenile at the time, Pires was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
