Two off-duty Massachusetts State Troopers come to rescue of injured hawk
There is a saying that officers are never truly off-duty. The same can be said for 2 Massachusetts State Troopers who came to the aid of an injured animal.
According to the State Police Association of Massachusetts, last week, Sgt. Ruef and his son Trooper Ruef of the 88th RTT, were off-duty in the area of Route 102 in Stockbridge when they came upon an injured Red-Tailed Hawk they believed flew into a car.
The hawk was struggling to maintain its balance and was rolling around in the travel lane.
They immediately blocked the lane to prevent further injury. When approached it quickly flew into the woods crashing into several trees. Trooper Ruef quickly removed his jacket closed the distance and took the hawk into custody without incident!
The hawk was transported to Westfield Barracks where custody was transferred to Western Mass Birds of Prey in Conway.
SPAM stated that at this time the bird is expected to make a full recovery and will be released in the spring of 2024.
