Two men saved, hospitalized after falling overboard
Two men were saved on Saturday thanks to some quick work by bystanders and authorities and some safety precautions taken by both men.
According to Yarmouth Natural Resources, on Saturday at approximately 11:30 a.m., Natural Resources was notified of a medical emergency aboard a 40’ sailing vessel 5 miles south of Squaw Island.
Yarmouth DNR Patrol Boat J48 responded along with Hyannis Fire Boat M1 and Barnstable Harbormaster. Yarmouth J48 arrived on scene and located the vessel. Hyannis Fire was able to transfer a medic aboard the vessel to render aid to the individual.
YNR stated that it was determined that two parties had fallen overboard. One had been retrieved from the water prior to their arrival while the other was in for over 20 minutes and unable to be retrieved. Once the second individual was retrieved, a possible medical condition developed.
Both were wearing life jackets.
Seas were 4’-6’ with winds gusting over 25 MPH. Due to the conditions, the sailing vessel was escorted back to Hyannis Yacht Club where an ambulance transferred the two men to the hospital in stable condition.
These two men survived because they were wearing lifejackets.
