A little friendly competition between students at two Fall River schools resulted in hundreds of dollars being donated.

According to Fall River Public Schools, this week the students in the schools’ summer programs t Spencer Borden and Greene Elementary were involved in a Penny Wars competition.

The ‘war’ was a fundraiser where grade-level teams competed for the most points. While each coin was worth the number of points based on its value each penny was counted ‘positively’ toward the grade-level points while coins like nickels, dimes, and quarters were counted ‘negatively’. Students would place pennies into their own grade-level buckets while putting silver coins into other classrooms’ buckets.

This is the second year of the Penny Wars Competition at Spencer Borden and the first year the students at Greene participated in the challenge.

This year the students donated $376 to Forever Paws Animal Shelter. Nearly triple the amount of money they raised last year.

The Fall River area community continues to show its support to the shelter after taking in 21 dogs in an animal cruelty case.
