Tragic twist in Newport: Officers find murdered 85-year-old during death notification for 66-year-old bridge jumper

A shocking twist and a disturbing find were discovered by Rhode Island authorities this week.

According to Newport Police, on Monday at 10:10 a.m., at the request of the Bristol Police Department, Newport Police Officers responded to a room at the Harbor Base Inn, 372 Connell Highway, room 132, to make a death notification regarding a 66-year-old male who jumped from the Mount Hope Bridge. 

When officers arrived, they found 85-year-old Terry Costello deceased inside the room. An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday by the Rhode Island State Medical Examinator’s Office, and the death is being investigated as a homicide. 

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Authorities stated that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
