Tragedy strikes local family again as missing airman formerly from South Coast found dead

Tragedy has struck a local family once again as a United States airman has been found dead.

Camden Mello, part of the 48th Fighter Wing Command Team, went missing Thursday night and was found dead Friday morning. Mello was an airman from RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom.

According to Colonel Jason Camilletti, a preliminary investigation has determined that it is believed that Mello took his own life.

Mello leaves behind a wife Lauren, and his father Jeff among many relatives and friends.

Camden’s mother, Amber Mello, from Westport, was murdered in New Orleans in March of 2020 while on vacation.

Lauren left a touching and heartbreaking tribute to her husband on social media.

“You took my hand from my lap and put it in yours as you drove me to work that morning. You brought it to your lips and gave me the softest kiss so I returned the favor. You pulled to the side and I leaned over to kiss you goodbye. You looked into my eyes as you told me you loved me. I said I loved you back and that I hoped you have a good day at work. If I had even the slightest inclination that this would be the last time I saw those big puppy dog eyes stare back at mine I would have got back in that car and told you to keep driving…..I have no idea how many times I brought the jacket you wore that morning to my face and buried myself in it hoping to feel closer to you. But most of all I have no idea how I am going to make it through life knowing the plans we had made together have slipped away…..I love you darling and I will see you in the next life. Hug your loved ones every day and tell them how much you love them because you never know how much longer you have with them.”
