Three were injured Wednesday in a serious crash in Westport.

According to Detective Jeff Majewski, on July 18 at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Westport Police received numerous calls of a rollover motor vehicle crash on Route 88 in between Charlotte White Road and the Hixbridge Road intersection. Police were also told there were multiple injuries.

A Westport Fire Department Fire Engine as well as two ambulances with multiple paramedics were called to the crash. Mutual aid was also requested from the Fall River Fire Department for an additional ambulance. The Westport Fire Department utilized the Jaws of Life to free two of the three passengers inside the Jeep Patriot. Two females and a male were transported to area hospitals including RI Hospital.

Officers learned that a Route 88 construction crew were transporting an arrow board trailer off of the highway, headed north, when the trailer came free from the hitch. The Jeep was headed south on Route 88 and struck the small trailer which caused the Jeep to lose control. Witnesses reported the Jeep had rolled over approximately five times and came to rest on its wheels. The highway was shut down in between both intersections for approximately 90 minutes.

The Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit was called to the scene. The highway was not under construction at that time. The driver of the construction truck was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation by Westport Police Officer Cody Smith.
