The saga of Umi’s Steakhouse continues

First they closed, then they opened again, then they closed again, now they will open again?

Umi’s had re-opened their G.A.R. Highway location after a closure of about a week. Owner Wing Tai came in front of the Board of Selectmen in Swansea to have the establishment’s liquor and entertainment licenses renewed in December. Umi’s re-opened to keep their licenses, but the opening did not last long. The restaurant closed again on December 31st.

The owners came in front of the Board of Selectmen Tuesday evening after concern from the Selectmen over the issue of granting a liquor license and then seeing the restaurant quickly close.

Joanne and Wing Tai stated they are in the process of beginning renovations on the establishment with an eventual March re-opening if all goes well. The Tai’s plan on removing the hood and turning the eatery into a regular closed kitchen. They stated one issue they were having with the old format was it was taking too long for customers to get their food. The Tai’s are undecided on a possible name change due to the new format.

The Selectmen, who are understandably skeptical, plan on revoking the liquor license if progress on the property is not shown.

Will we see another opening at Umi’s Japanese Steakhouse? Stay tuned.
