State Police: One dead, another injured, one arrested after fatal crash on Route 146

One person has died, another person was injured, and another was arrested after a fatal collision in Rhode Island.

According to Rhode Island State Police, on Wednesday, at approximately 9:40 p.m., Troopers from the Lincoln Woods and Scituate Barracks, as well as members from the North Smithfield Police and Fire Departments, responded to calls for pedestrians struck on Route 146 North in the Town of North Smithfield.

The investigation revealed that Thomas Lamoureux, age 63 and of no permanent address, and another male were walking southbound in the right shoulder of Route 146 North. At a point approximately 833 feet south of the intersection of Sayles Hill Road, both pedestrians were struck by a BMW sedan operated by Nicholas Stone, age 25, of North Smithfield.

Lamoureux was pronounced deceased on scene by North Smithfield Fire personnel. The other victim sustained serious injuries, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by North Smithfield Rescue and is in stable condition.

Stone fled the scene in his vehicle, struck a RIPTA van, and was located a short time later in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart located at 7 Dowling Village Boulevard, in North Smithfield. He displayed obvious signs of impairment and failed a Field Sobriety Test administered on scene. Stone was subsequently placed into custody without incident and transported to Landmark Hospital in Woonsocket by the Woonsocket Fire Department where he was treated, released, and transported to State Police Headquarters.

Stone was held overnight pending arraignment at Third District Court on the following charges:

Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor or Drugs Resulting in Death – First Offense
Driving to Endanger Resulting in Death
Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Death – First Offense
Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor of Drugs Resulting in Serious Personal Injury
Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury – First Offense
Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Damage to Another Vehicle
Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test

State Police Detectives, well as members of the State Police Forensic Services Unit and Crash Reconstruction Unit also responded.

    Nice way to ruin your life as well as take the life of someone else. If you want to drink then stay home or spend the night at a friend’s. If you’re out then call an Uber. If you can’t afford it then don’t drink.
