State Police investigating after Massachusetts man who was found dead in river identified

Authorities are investigating after a Massachusetts man was found deceased.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, on Wednesday, at approximately 2:00 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the area of 148 Montague City Road in Greenfield following a report of an individual observed floating in the Connecticut River.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel utilized a boat to access the water and recover the adult male, Lawrence Poirier, 74, of Gill. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

The matter remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, along with members of the State Police Crime Scene Services, the Greenfield Police and Fire Departments, and the Montague Police and Fire Departments. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
