A local active-duty Massachusetts State Trooper has died, according to his union.

The State Police Association of Massachusetts has announced the sudden passing of Sergeant Gregory Furtado, of the 79th Recruit Training Troop, currently assigned to Cape & Islands State Police Detective Unit.

At this time, details and arrangements have not been released.

Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J Galibois stated on social media that “Sgt. Gregory Furtado strongly and professionally led our Narcotics Task Force. Our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues in law enforcement.”

Over the years, Furtado has been involved in arrests from the Brockton area to the South Coast.

SPAM stated that their “thoughts are with Sergeant Furtado’s wife, children, and coworkers as well as their family and friends as they process this tragic loss.”

Troopers from the Employee Assistance Unit are available, and SPAM encourages any members struggling with the loss of Furtado to reach out.
