Somerset’s new Big Red Slide tested, set to open next week

The community has been waiting for it and the time has finally come.

Barry Fontaine, Somerset Recreation Director, stated today that after testing the slide and with the announcement by Governor Baker that the state is reopening, the new Big Red Slide is set for a soft opening on Memorial Day weekend this Saturday.

Fontaine said that a dedication ceremony will take place in June where photos of the old slide and previous patrons will be displayed.

To use the slide, in addition to parking, Pierce Beach, the restrooms, and the three playgrounds, there is a charge of $8 dollars for residents and $16 for non-residents per car per day. You can also pickup a season pass for $35 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Somerset seniors 62+ get in free along with Somerset veterans.

Fontaine says that the new stainless steel slide gives a nice ride with some speed on it while the sound from the steel allows those accompanying children to be able to hear them going down the slide.

In addition to replacing the slide, Fontaine says that other improvements to the area have recently taken place such as 800 tons of sand, horseshoes, and playground upgrades.

The parking lot holds 125 cars so don’t be afraid to come down and experience some fun!
