Somerset Fire and Police respond to firey car crash outside Brayton Point Saturday
The Somerset Fire and Police Departments aided in a fiery crash Saturday evening.
According to Police Chief George McNeil, at approximately 9:30 PM, Officers of the Somerset Police Department were dispatched to the Brayton Point Commerce Center for the report of a brush fire accompanied by possible explosions. The Somerset Fire Department was also dispatched.
First responding officers at the scene located the source of the fire emanating from an area outside the main gate of the facility. As officers approached, it became apparent that a vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle, for reasons still unknown to officers, left the roadway and drove down a steep embankment. Calls for help could be heard, and a woman emerged from the crash scene. The woman, who identified herself as the driver of the vehicle, was then lifted out of the embankment by officers. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames and contain the fire.
The vehicle was eventually removed from its location with the use of heavy equipment.
An investigation into the cause of the apparent motor vehicle crash and subsequent fire is ongoing.
