Several inches of rain, strong winds forecast for RI, Southern New England

According to the National Weather Service, There is potential for heavy rainfall and possible flooding along with strong winds Wednesday into Thursday for Southeast New England.

A period of heavy rainfall is expected late Wednesday night and Thursday. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected with locally up to 3 inches possible across eastern CT, RI and southeast MA. This may result in areas of urban and poor drainage flooding, as well as some river flooding.

Strong southerly wind gusts to 50-55 mph possible from late morning into the afternoon on Thursday, across portions of RI and southeast MA, including the Cape and Islands.

Here is the upcoming forecast:

Wednesday Night
A chance of showers before 10pm, then rain, mainly after 10pm. Areas of fog before 2am, then areas of fog after 3am. Temperature rising to around 52 by 2am. South wind 11 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday
Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 3pm, then rain likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Areas of fog before 8am. High near 57. Breezy, with a south wind 16 to 21 mph becoming northwest 8 to 13 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 49 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Thursday Night
A chance of showers, mainly before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. West wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
