Fall River — Fall River Public Schools is inviting community members to attend a ribbon cutting, recognition, and dedication ceremony for The Alfredo P. Alves Playground at the John J. Doran Community School, 101 Fountain Street, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.

A long-time Fall River resident, business leader, city council member, and an advocate for the students at the Doran Community School, Alves was passionate about the Columbia Street neighborhood.

The newly renovated playground will be dedicated in Alves’ honor as a tribute to his dedication and commitment, to the school and the community. Al, as he was known, donated thousands of dollars to the Doran School, according to FRPS, and he did so without fanfare. He unofficially adopted the school and would host Christmas parties, graduation dinners, and other fundraisers for the school at his restaurant, Tabacaria Açoreana (TA).

Alves passed away in May 2019.

Funding to renovate the playground was approved by the Fall River School Committee in 2023.

The playground is designed for children three to six years old and is one of two playgrounds on school grounds.

Hopefully Mayor Coogan is working on plans for a series of ‘ Drag Queen’ events for the small children at the new playground … just as he convened at the Public Library.

Mr Alves was a great man, his memory will live on with this play ground. And to make a political statement on this site is wrong.

Mayor you are a sick man , trying to poison the minds of the small children with drag queens event. I hope and pray to God that you will change your mind.

Hopefully he is choosing to use his time and our tax money on helping the homeless.
