Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announces that the State Police has charged a second person in connection with the assault on a guard at the Adult Correctional Institutions on May 11, 2018.

Joshua H. Becker, age 31, an inmate at the Adult Correctional Institutions whose last known address was 218 Slate Hill Road, Cranston, was charged with:

• Conspiracy to Commit an Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony
• Conspiracy to Assault a Corrections Officer
• Weapons Other than Firearms Prohibited

Becker was arrested Wednesday after an investigation by members of the Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit assigned to the ACI who found that he allegedly provided the weapon another inmate allegedly used to stab a correctional officer in the Maximum Security Facility on May 11. He was arraigned on Wednesday in Third Division District Court and bail was set at $25,000 with surety. He also was presented as a bail violator and was remanded back to the ACI, pending further court action.

Becker is an inmate in the Maximum Security Facility at the Adult Correctional Institutions, where he is serving 15 years of a 30-year sentence on charges of first-degree robbery, felony assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with the intent to commit a felony in connection with the armed robbery of a gas station in Smithfield in 2010.

The investigation by detectives from the Major Crimes Unit found that Becker allegedly provided the makeshift weapon, a sharpened piece of metal commonly referred to as a shank, to a fellow maximum security prisoner, John Carillo, age 79, on the morning of May 11.

Carillo, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of Correctional Officer Donald Price in 1973, allegedly used this weapon to stab a correctional officer around 10:30 a.m. that day. He was immediately arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon; assault on a correctional officer; and disorderly conduct.

The correctional officer was treated at Rhode Island Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after the assault.
