Rhode Island woman charged after multiple dogs found in disturbing condition

COVENTRY, RI – A Rhode Island woman is facing animal cruelty charges after a police investigation.

On 4/12/24, the Coventry Police Department’s Uniformed Patrol Division and Animal Control Officers responded to the area of Helen Dr. for the report of two stray dogs that appeared to be emaciated. Officers on scene located two Pit Bull type dogs that were severely underweight, with their hips, spines, and ribs clearly visible through their skin. The dogs were also suffering from skin infections causing hair loss, along with old wounds to their face and head.

These dogs were immediately taken to a local animal hospital for treatment.

After a thorough and timely investigation, the owner of the dogs was identified as 26-year-old Casey Mooney. It is alleged that Mooney’s neglect in caring for the animals contributed to their current condition. Mooney responded to Coventry Police Headquarters on April 18th for questioning, where she was ultimately charged with two counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animal, and two counts of Care of Dogs.

After being processed at Coventry Police Headquarters, Mooney will be due in 3rd District Court on May 15 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Presently, the dogs are in the care and custody of Coventry Animal Control Officers and are not available for adoption at this time.
