Rhode Island State Police K-9 featured on news outlets across the country passes away
The Rohde Island State Police have announced the passing of a popular K-9.
RISP reported that K-9 Thoreau joined the force in 2014 and was handled by Trooper Adam Houston.
Thoreau was bred to be a guiding eyes dog but did not pass the screening process.
He was adopted by the Connecticut State Police, trained as one of the first two electronic storage device canines in the country, and was the first in Rhode Island. During his career, he executed approximately 200 searches related to child exploitation, cyber-crimes and terrorism-related investigations.
Thoreau was a great ambassador for RISP. He was featured by news agencies throughout the world, including CNN, NBC, Fox, BBC, and the New York Times and appeared on NBC’s Today Show and the NBC Nightly News. He was the star in many public speaking engagements and was always eager to lay down with a group of students during Internet safety presentations or provide comfort to a victim of a sex crime by simply sitting next to them.
Rest easy Thoreau.
