Rhode Island man avoids prison time after vehicle fatally injured 71-year-old Maria Vega Rivera
A Rhode Island man has pled guilty after a woman was hit and killed by a snowplow.
71-year-old Maria Vega Rivera of North Providence was struck on the afternoon of January 16th in the parking lot of a senior living complex called Maple Gardens Apartments.
She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Multiple reports stated that Vega-Rivera was struck by a plow operated by 30-year-old Lloyd Card who was driving an unregistered truck with a suspended license.
According to WJAR 10, Card pled guilty Friday and lost his license for three months and faces less than $1,000 in fines. He stated that he didn’t see Vega Rivera when the truck hit her.
Vega Rivera’s daughter Diana Lopez stated in a GoFundMe fundraiser that Maria has 4 children, a grandmother of 9, and a great grandmother of 17.
“She was always a person of peace and unity. She loved her plants and shopping.”
Lopez organized the fundraiser to get her mother’s body to Puerto Rico, where she was born and raised.
