Rhode Island couple arrested after 2-year-old child is unresponsive, tests positive for multiple drugs
A Rhode Island couple is facing multiple charges after a young child was unresponsive due to drug exposure.
According to Detective Sergeant Theodore Georgitsis, on Monday at approximately 1:45 p.m., Pawtucket Police and Fire responded to an apartment located on Prospect Street in Prospect Heights for a report of an unresponsive 2-year-old child, not breathing.
The child was immediately taken to Hasbro Children’s hospital.
The Major Crimes Division continued the investigation and along with patrol held the scene at the apartment. Preliminary statements were taken from the mother of the child as well as her boyfriend.
DCYF was notified and responded to the hospital.
The investigation later uncovered that the child tested positive for fentanyl, cocaine and xylazine exposure.
With this information a search warrant was obtained and executed at the apartment with the assistance of the Pawtucket
Police Special Squad Narcotics Detectives. Narcotics were located within the residence and seized.
Georgitsis stated that on Tuesday, arrest warrants for the mother and boyfriend were obtained for the endangerment of the child as well as for numerous drug offenses.
Earlier Tuesday afternoon, both the mother and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Emarys Cruz and 28-year-old Jeifry Dejesus, both from Pawtucket, were apprehended and held overnight.
Both will be arraigned Wednesday in 6th District Court in Providence.
The child has thankfully recovered and is in stable condition.
