An assistant principal at a Rhode Island high school who reportedly sent faculty an email asking for donations concerning a student who owed money to a human smuggling cartel is no longer working at the school.

Stefani Harvey was the assistant principal at Mount Pleasant High School in Providence and reportedly asked staff in January for money to pay for “coyote” fees “a group that helps people”.

The email was confirmed as legitimate by officials who stated that the correspondence sent by Harvey was “not appropriate”.

A coyote is a person who smuggles an undocumented immigrant across the Mexico and United States border.

Harvey deactivated her twitter account after the incident.

According to WJAR 10, the investigation into the incident is complete, and Harvey no longer works at the school after being placed on paid administrative leave.

It is not clear exactly when the leave ended.
