Residents displaced after fire at eight-unit apartment building in Bristol County

ATTLEBORO — A fire in an eight-unit apartment building was extinguished Sunday afternoon before it could spread to neighboring apartments.

According to AFD, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to 23 Dean St. for a reported building fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke showing from the second floor of the high occupancy apartment building. The building’s automatic sprinkler system had activated inside the fire unit, helping contain the fire until crews arrived. Firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining fire. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin. However, smoke and water damage affected other areas of the building.

“This incident is a perfect example of why properly maintained fire protection systems are so important” said District Chief Scott Godin. “The sprinkler system activated as designed and kept the fire confined to a single apartment, significantly reducing the amount of damage and preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.”

All residents have been temporarily displaced while the building owner arranges temporary housing.

The Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit responded to determine the cause of the fire.

National Grid responded to disconnect electrical service to the building.

No residents or firefighters were injured.

Firefighters remained on scene until approximately 3:35 p.m.
