Report ranks Massachusetts high schools, area schools generally fare poorly
A new report ranked high schools from across the state and across the country and most of the schools in the Fall River area, that were ranked, did not fare well.
Out of the 342 schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report, Fall River failed to crack the top 200.
B M C Durfee High is ranked 235th within Massachusetts. Durfee had an 81% graduation rate, according to the report, with a college readiness score of 23.3.
Diman Regional Vocational Technical High is ranked 266th within Massachusetts. While Diman had a 98 graduation rate, their college readiness score came in at 4.8.
Westport Junior/Senior High school fared better with a ranking of 156. Westport was boosted by a high college readiness score of 39.5 and a graduation rate of 99%.
Somerset Berkley came in at #211 with a graduation rate of 94%, but a college readiness score of 32.8.
Joseph Case entered the rankings at #162 with a 95% graduation rate and 27.1 college readiness.
The best ranking for a local high school in Massachusetts was Dartmouth who came in at #123 in the state due to their 47.0 college readiness score. The graduation rate came in at 91%.
Tiverton came in at #19 in Rhode Island compared to 5,619 schools ranked in the state. In contrast to the local Massachusetts High Schools, however, Tiverton came in with an 85% graduation rate and 16.7 for college readiness.
The report was ranked based on the following criteria:
College Readiness|30%
The proportions of 12th graders who took and passed at least one AP or IB exam. Passing is worth three times more than just taking.
Math and Reading Proficiency|20%
Aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation.
Math and Reading Performance|20%
How aggregated scores on state assessments compare to U.S. News’s expectations given the proportions of students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households.
Underserved Student Performance|10%
Scores on state assessments aggregated just among students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households. These scores are compared to what is typical in the state for non-undeserved students, with parity or higher being the goal.
College Curriculum Breadth|10%
The proportions of 12th graders who took and passed AP and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams up to a maximum of four. Passing an exam is worth three times more than taking.
Graduation Rate|10%
The proportion of entering 9th graders who graduated four academic years later.
Boston Latin came in at #1 in Massachusetts and 33rd in the country.
