Repeated Taunton domestic abuser sentenced to state prison, awaiting trial on other charges

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn, III announced today that a 38 year old Taunton man was sentenced to serve six to eight years in state prison for violating the terms and conditions of his court ordered probation.

According to Gregg Miliote of the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Christian Goulart was found in violation of his probation after a hearing in Fall River Superior Court and was sentenced to state prison last week. He had been on probation for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury following a seven year state prison sentence. First Assistant Patrick O. Bomberg prosecuted the case for the Commonwealth.

On June 14, 2018, Taunton police met with a female victim who stated that her boyfriend of six months, Christian Goulart, had assaulted her. The victim was bleeding from her forehead and told police about the most recent incident of domestic abuse. The defendant had lured the victim to a cemetery near her home by claiming that he was going to commit suicide. Once there, he jumped on the hood of her car and punched her windshield. He then struck her in the head with a cell phone. The defendant was extremely intoxicated during the incident and on other occasions, which violated a condition of his probation requiring him to abstain from alcohol. Following her first meeting with the police on June 14, the victim provided additional details of the defendant abusing her during their relationship and this information led to additional charges and the indictment of the defendant.

The defendant is currently awaiting trial for charges of strangulation/suffocation, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a family/household member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and malicious damage to a motor vehicle. He has a lengthy record that includes multiple state prison sentences.

“This is a very violent defendant who has already served a seven year state prison sentence for violent behavior. It is no surprise to me that he violated the terms of his probation by viciously assaulting his girlfriend” District Attorney Quinn said. “He is a career criminal who simply needs to be locked up.”
