Providence police officer suspended 2 days concerning Gonsalves moped crash, others disciplined

Several officers were disciplined Friday concerning a moped crash that critically injured 24-year-old Jhamal Gonsalves in Providence.

Providence Police Commissioner Steven Paré began the press conference by expressing his thoughts and prayers to Gonsalves and his recovery.

Paré went on to say that Endres, who is a six year veteran of the force, will be suspended one day for driving without his seat belt and a second day for not driving his vehicle in a safe manner. He will also be retrained in emergency vehicle operations.

The two day suspension is the maximum that Endres could be suspended without pay.

Three other officers were given a verbal warning for not using their body cameras.

Paré also stated that an officer who fumbled while administered Narcan will be retrained as it was a new form of Narcan that the officer was not familiar with. All officers on the force will be trained concerning the new Narcan.

Two additional officers will receive future punishment concerning how witnesses were dealt with at the scene. This review is not yet finished, according to Paré.

On Thursday, Attorney General Peter Neronha and RI State Police announced that, according to an investigation, Endres did not hit the moped driven by Gonsalves.

Gonsalves’ father Mark, later held a press conference stating that a civil lawsuit will be filed. The beginnings of a protest march is also in the works.
