Providence man killed in Sunday morning crash
A Sunday morning crash has claimed the life of a local man.
According to Massachusetts State Police, just after 5 a.m. today. troopers assigned to State Police-Leominster received reports of a motor vehicle crash with injuries on Route 2 westbound in the area of Exit 29 in Fitchburg. Troopers responded to that location along with Fitchburg EMS.
Upon their arrival they discovered a Ford Transit van that had been involved in a crash with the operator, a 54-year-old man from Providence, R.I., suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to Leominster Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Preliminary investigation shows the van was traveling Route 2 westbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, it traveled off the roadway and crashed into a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the operator was the sole occupant of the van.
The crash remains under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police along with the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services. Troopers were assisted on scene by MassDOT.
