Portions of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut could see over 2 inches of rain as severe storms could bring flooding, strong winds

Parts of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut could be in for some wild weather the next two days.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms return this evening through Wednesday morning. There is a risk for a few strong to severe storms and heavy downpours. Localized flash flooding is possible in poor drainage areas.

An upper level trough slowly pushes across eastern U.S./Canada today through Thursday. This will support the return of unsettled weather with potential for strong storms and minor localized flash flooding tonight into Wednesday. Rain accumulation could rise to 1.5-2.0″+ across southern New England this evening.

The environment will not only support heavy downpours, but also a strong to severe storm or two with damaging winds.

The timeframe at which this falls will be the big factor for flash flooding potential. Given that embedded storms are possible, localized flash flooding is certainly a concern.

For timing, this will primarily be an evening and overnight event into the early morning hours of Wednesday. Depending on the timing of these shortwaves showers/storms may develop as early as late afternoon; however, chances increase for the evening and overnight timeframe.

Scattered thunderstorms are also possible later Wednesday, but will be dependent on the degree of clearing during the day.

Southern Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts are currently under a High Surf Advisory until Thursday night.
