Police in RI investigating Saturday fatal pedestrian crash

Colonel Michael J. Winquist, Chief of the Cranston Police Department, announces the Cranston Police Traffic Unit and BCI Unit are actively investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred in the roadway in front of 575 Dyer Avenue.

On January 11, 2020 at 5:22 pm the Cranston Police received an emergency call of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle in front of 575 Dyer Avenue. When officers and rescue personnel arrived, they observed a female fatally injured in the southbound lane who had succumb to her injuries. The victim is identified as Angelina Cruz Hernandez, 76, of 575 Dyer Avenue, Cranston.

The area was closed off for approximately three hours while traffic re-constructionists and BCI detectives processed the scene and seized the vehicle involved in the crash. The RI State Medical Examiner’s Office also responded and is assisting in the investigation. A preliminary investigation by the Cranston Police Department Traffic Unit indicates a 2008 Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound on Dyer Avenue. As the Nissan approached the crosswalk in front of the Riverbend Apartments located at 575 Dyer Avenue, the victim, Angelina Hernandez was crossing the roadway and was struck by the vehicle sustaining fatal injuries.

At this time no charges have been filed against the operator and there were no signs of impairment by the operator of the vehicle involved. The investigation continues and this is only a preliminary report.
