Police chase on Route 6 leads to arrests of two from New Bedford, Freetown, recovery of stolen motorcycle

According to police, on Monday October 4th, the Mattapoisett Police Department placed two suspects in custody after a vehicle and foot pursuit which ended in Fairhaven.

At approximately 9:48 p.m., Sgt. Dumas from the Mattapoisett Police Department received information that the Wareham Police Department was looking for a U-Haul truck which was possibly involved in the larceny of a motorcycle in their town. Communities throughout the Southcoast have been experiencing a drastic increase in the theft of high-end motorcycles, according to police.

Sgt. Dumas observed the suspect vehicle exit I-195 westbound and proceed south on North Street. Sgt. Dumas activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle disregarded his lights and siren and a pursuit began. Mattapoisett Officers Tavares and Borges assisted Sgt. Dumas.

Fairhaven Police were notified that Mattapoisett Officers were pursuing a vehicle which was traveling west on Route 6 towards Fairhaven. Sgt. Gordon from the Fairhaven Police Department was able to successfully deploy his stop sticks and deflate all four tires of the vehicle. The vehicle continued for a short distance and eventually stopped in the parking lot of 4 David Drown Boulevard. Once the vehicle stopped, both the operator and the passenger fled on foot and were placed into custody after a short foot pursuit.

The motorcycle which was valued at approximately $17,000 was recovered at the scene and returned to the owner.

Donnie Moniz, 18, from New Bedford, was placed into custody and transported to the Mattapoisett Police Department for booking. Moniz was charged with Receiving Stolen Property. Rory A. Santos-Barrows Jr., 22, from East Freetown, was placed into custody and transported to the Mattapoisett Police Station for booking. Santos-Barrows Jr. was charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Police, Marked Lanes Violation, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Speeding.

Both suspects were transported to the Wareham 4th District Court on October 5, 2021 to be arraigned on the above charges.

Fairhaven Police, Wareham Police and Trooper Kyle Pavao from the Massachusetts State Police assisted with the arrest.
