UPDATE: Name released in fatal pedestrian crash on I-195 in Swansea

A person was killed Saturday afternoon in a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

According to Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Massachusetts State Police Troopers from the Dartmouth Barracks responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle on Route 195 eastbound at Exit 8 in Swansea. The male pedestrian suffered fatal injuries.

Preliminary investigation by responding Troopers indicates that 47-year-old Ulise M. Pena of Pawtucket, R.I., who was a passenger in a 2003 Dodge Ram, became involved in an altercation with the driver, a 51-year-old Providence man, while the pickup was traveling westbound on Route 195.

The driver pulled into the westbound breakdown lane and Pena exited the pickup. Pena then ran across all three westbound lanes and onto the eastbound side, where he was struck by a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup operated by a 21-year-old Lincoln, R.I., man.

Upon arrival, Troopers found Pena on the roadway and performed CPR and other emergency first aid. The victim was determined to be deceased at the scene.

Both drivers remained at the scene following the crash. The Ram pickup had an additional passenger, a 33-year-old Providence man. There were no other injuries.

Friends and family were left coping with the tragic and sudden loss of Ulise. Several stated how much he was loved and would be missed.

” He was a great person. I loved talking to him.”

The crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County. Swansea Police, Fire and EMS also assisted at the scene.

The rescue response and investigation necessitated the closure of the left lane for approximately three hours.
