THE CASE OF THE STOLEN WHEELCHAIR
My friend Cindy Morais is the greatest Patriots fan that I know. My family and I met Cindy when I was 11 and my brother was 5. She quickly taught the two of us everything she could about football and transformed us into dedicated Patriots fans. We quickly learned about Cindy’s passion for the Patriots and how that passion is consistent throughout the whole Morais family. So this year, when Cindy invited us to join her for the playoff game, versus the Titans, we couldn’t say no. Bundled up with as many layers as we could handle we headed off to see our first playoff game, but not Cindy’s (she has been a season ticket holder for 6 years now and absolutely loves it). Oh, and what a playoff game it was! We were up on our feet; chanting, yelling out “first down” and high fiving after each big play.
Unfortunately, the game ended on a low note. Throughout the season, Cindy attends as many games as she can and is well known by others in her section, the last row of section 304 (this means her seats are as high up as you can get at Gillette Stadium). Despite having Cerebral Palsy, since birth, Cindy will leave her wheelchair under the stairs of section 304 and will climb up all those steps until she gets to “her” row. So for this playoff game, we followed her 6-year routine and left her wheelchair under the stairs before heading up. When the game was over, we headed back down and soon discovered that Cindy’s wheelchair had been stolen. Honestly, at first, we couldn’t wrap our heads around that. Who goes and steals someone else’s wheelchair? DId someone think this would be a fun joke to play on someone? Did anyone see the chair get taken? We notified the Gillette Stadium security and very quickly all of the security guards were on the lookout for Cindy’s wheelchair. This was so upsetting for Cindy. She was anxious, upset and couldn’t grasp the fact that someone had taken her wheelchair. The staff at Gillette were unable to find Cindy’s chair but helped us get her to our car, and we appreciate all their help with that. They wrote down her information and said they would contact her if the chair turns up.
Cindy’s family were very upset with the news. With plans on attending the AFC championships, her brother bought Cindy a new chair to use so that she can attend the game. I hope next week’s game ends on a great note for Cindy. It’s crazy, that after 6 years, she now needs to lock up her wheelchair in fear that someone will take it again.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE. Let’s see if we can find Cindy’s chair! The chair has her name on the back of it, Cindy Morais, and if anyone was at the game and saw it please, please let us know.
