One Fall River area high school climbs up rankings in new report, others drop

A new report ranked high schools from across the state and across the country including the Fall River area.

Out of the 351 high schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report in Massachusetts in 2024, Fall River cracked the top 200 once, an improvement from last year. However, every other Fall River area school saw a decline in ranking.

Diman came in at #1 in the city once again and 182nd within Massachusetts, an improvement from #208 in 2023. Diman’s high ranking earned it eligibility to display a U.S. News Best High School Award Badge. Badge eligibility recognizes educational excellence. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School is 22%.

The report was ranked based on the following criteria:

College Readiness|30%
The proportions of 12th graders who took and passed at least one AP or IB exam. Passing is worth three times more than just taking.

Math, Reading, and Science Proficiency|20%
Aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation.

Math, Reading, and Science Performance|20%
How aggregated scores on state assessments compare to U.S. News’s expectations given the proportions of students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households.

Underserved Student Performance|10%
Scores on state assessments aggregated just among students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households. These scores are compared to what is typical in the state for non-undeserved students, with parity or higher being the goal.

College Curriculum Breadth|10%
The proportions of 12th graders who took and passed AP and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams up to a maximum of four. Passing an exam is worth three times more than taking.

Graduation Rate|10%
The proportion of entering 9th graders who graduated four academic years later.

Boston Latin came in at #1 in Massachusetts again this year and 27th in the country.

    All the money spent for a new building and various programs and the best we could do is 268 ?

      it’s not the building ,,it’s what’s in the building … uncaring undereducated teachers there for the 180 day work year with entry level 60K income , who don’t even instruct anymore but hand the kids a chrome book and sit at their desk on their cell phones ,,,teachers and students alike . gang related incidents daily , fights and sexual harassment/inappropriate incidents in the lavatories and the heads of office turn a blind eye .
