One ejected from the vehicle, another arrested, after early morning crash in Rhode Island

One person was seriously injured and another arrested after a serious crash early this weekend.

According to Lieutenant Timothy Kenyon on Saturday, at approximately 7:46 a.m., the Warwick Police Department responded to the intersection of Warwick Avenue and Killey Avenue for a report a single car motor vehicle accident involving an occupant that was ejected from the vehicle.

Warwick Police Officers arrived on scene and learned that a male driver was traveling northbound on Warwick Avenue in the left travel lane when his vehicle abruptly swerved and struck a utility pole. As a result, the rear female passenger was ejected from the vehicle, sustaining serious injuries.

The rear female passenger was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is in serious condition. The Warwick Police Accident Reconstruction team responded to the scene and is actively investigating.

Based on the initial investigation, the driver was arrested and charged with Driving so as to endanger, resulting in serious personal injury, Driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, resulting in serious bodily injury, and Refusal to submit to chemical test. The driver, whose name was not released by police, will be held pending a bail hearing.

The roadway was closed for several hours after the crash.
