Olaf the Snowman, Cymry, Krampus meet and greets, Disney toy giveaway among activities at Fall River Public Library
Some exciting things are happening in the coming days at the Fall River Public Library, including visits from Olaf the Snowman and Krampus!
On Saturday, December 4, kids will have the chance to meet Olaf the Snowman from the Frozen movie series. Olaf will be at the library to meet fans and pose for pictures in the Fell Reading Room from 11 am – 1 pm. Joining Olaf will be Cymry from Cymry’s Christmas Wish, and she has a special surprise for the first 300 children to attend—a Disney Genie plush toy! Families can also register to win one of eight fully decorated Christmas trees. Winners of the raffle will be announced by 3 pm. This event is sponsored in part by Cymry’s Christmas Wish.
Also on Saturday, December 4, the library’s chess club will meet at 1 pm, and BCC will hold a bake sale and clothing drive (not sponsored by the library) in the Meeting Room from 12-4 pm.
KRAMPUS will visit the library on Monday, December 6 from 5-6 pm to celebrate the European tradition of Krampus Night! Krampus is St. Nicholas’s horned, beastly companion, who is known to punish naughty children by stealing them away in his sack. If you have been good, come meet Krampus and have your picture taken with him by the Krampus Tree! Please note that this event is recommended for adults; older kids and teens may attend, but Krampus may be too scary for little ones. There is also a Krampus craft; call the library at 508-324-2700, ext. 2, to register for this event.
The library shows free big-screen movies on Mondays at 1 pm and 6 pm. The movie for December 6 is Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin (rated PG-13).
The Children’s Department is offering weekly take-home crafts. The craft for the week of December 6 is a Grinch Action Toy! Pick yours up in the Children’s Room while supplies last. Also, when you visit the Children’s Room, pick a Holiday Twister from the jar for a chance to win one of more than 30 stuffed Christmas stockings!
Preschool Storytime is held on Tuesday, December 7, at 11 am, and Play & Learn, sponsored by Fall River Schools, is held Wednesday, December 8 at 10 am.
If you love to knit or crochet, join the Knitting Club on Tuesday, December 7 at 2:30 p.m. Bring your own needles, yarn, and a work in progress, and share tips and patterns with other knitters. Beginners are welcome! The Knitting Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m.
The weekly Magic: the Gathering group meets on Wednesday, December 8, at 5 pm in the Fell Reading Room. Both adults and teens (age 12 and up) are welcome to attend, and new players are always welcome.
The library invites everyone to take advantage of the new, free streaming service, Kanopy! Kanopy offers a wide selection of both contemporary and classic films that you can watch free on your mobile device, computer, or smart TV. Your library card gives you access to five free movies each month, plus unlimited children’s programs and Great Courses video classes. Check it out at https://fallriverlibrary.kanopy.com/.
Finally, to finish out the week, there is two awesome events on Saturday, December 11. First, children and families can enjoy a Christmas Storytime at the historic Lafayette-Durfee House on 94 Cherry Street. This event starts promptly at 11 am at the Lafayette-Durfee House (not in the library), and includes a Christmas story, ornament craft, and a historic house tour.
Then, head over to the library to get a Henna Tattoo! The library will be offering free henna tattoos from 12-2:00 p.m. This event is recommended for teens through adults. Registration is not required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Fall River Public Library.
