Officials announce name of Massachusetts bicyclist that died from injuries after driver opened car door

SOMERVILLE – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Somerville Chief of Police Charles Femino have confirmed the investigation in fatal collision involving a bicyclist that occurred on Friday at approximately 11:20 a.m. in the area of 1055 Broadway in Somerville.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the cyclist, identified as Stephen Conley, 70 of Somerville, was traveling westbound in the bike lane on Broadway when the operator of a Land Rover, that was parked, opened his driver side door. The bicyclist sustained life threatening injuries from the collision and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he died from his injuries on Saturday. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

“It is unfortunate for the community that we have to report this accident. The exact circumstances of how and why this accident occurred remain under investigation and our condolences remain with the family and friends of the victim,” said Police Chief Charles Femino.

This remains an open and active investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Somerville Police. A reconstruction of the crash will be conducted by Somerville Police as part of investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
